This is part of my koi pond series and I used a square canvas (paper) so I could play with the layout. In this one I focused more on the water than the fish. | I enjoy painting the koi fish - they have lots of personality. In this painting I tried to show how they hang together and interact. |

I was in a funk and started to paint so this one turned out the way it did. It is the harbor with the bridge and boats off in the distance in the early morning with the clouds in the sky. Size: 28" x 36" framed | My aunt used this phrase when she would come visit and look at all the greenery up on the North Coast. This painting came from a rolling hills southern section of the state, but it reminded me of her phrase. I did use lots of green on purpose in this one. Size: 24" x 30" framed |
This is the 3rd in my koi pond series. In this one I was trying for warmer colors. It came out a tad more calm, so I used "serenity" in the title. "Honorable Mention - Highland Art Center, Weaverville Juried Fall Show 2024". Size: 24" x 30" framed. Private collection. | This is the second in a series of koi pond paintings. In this one I was playing with the reflections of the trees and the rippling water. At the same time I liked the lights and darks from the fish, water blossoms and sky reflections. Size is 21.5" x 24" framed. private collection. |
In the garden koi pond I love to watch the shapes and colors of the fish and how they move through the water. This painting flowed from the beginning to the end - a nice treat for me! This painting won 2nd place in the Marin Society of Artists National Juried show-Artists Eye 2024 and the Award of Merit at the Redwood Art Assn. Fall 2024 Show. Size: 24" x 30" framed | On the way back from Tehachepi on Highway 58 I saw these beautiful rolling hills with the neat sky. When I saw that the highway was named Blue Star Memorial Highway, I knew I had to paint this. Size: 24" x 30" framed |
This is the larger vertical version of my mini painting of orange groves in the Bakersfield area of Southern California. The trees have distinct leaves and the skies were clear and calm that morning. Size: 30" x 24" vertical framed | This is a mini painting (16x20" framed) of an orange grove in southern California. I was walking through them in the morning and liked the columns of trees and the warmth and stillness of the air. |
This is the second in a Mono County series - the mountains on the Eastern side of the Sierras are pretty spectacular. I painted the trail that goes around the perimeter of Convict Lake. Award of Merit - Redwood Art Assn. Spring Show 2024 | This is the Hot Creek Geological site outside of Mammoth Lakes, Ca. The creek sits at the bottom of the old caldera and the springs have hot water boiling up. I loved the transitions from the creek area to the top of the Sierras. There was a lot of movement in the air. |
My dog, Bodie, walking through Upper Twin Lake while the sun was reflecting off of the surface of the water. I liked the shadows he created. | This is the second painting of my duckpond. In this one, an egret comes to visit the wild ducks and they all hang out together. |
I decided to paint some scenes from the yard and this one is of the old boat parked in our duckpond. This painting won 2nd place at the Humboldt Arts Council Juried Show 2023. | Mini painting of a eucalyptus tree - 14"x 17" framed. I liked the overall shape of the trunk, and the shapes within the tree because of the textured bark. |
My daughter was taking a photo of pigeons on the breakwater and I liked the colors in her backpack so I turned it into a painting. | Poplar trees in a grove with the light reflecting off the bark. |
Mini painting of a pigeon on the breakwater at Waikiki. 8.5" x 10" unframed. | I saw these two ducks out cruising when I was fishing at Lake Mary in Mammoth Lakes. I liked the water rippling and the pebbles underwater. |
This is the second in a series of water lotus plants. I really liked the water droplets on the leaves and flowers. It was fun playing with the background on this one. | This is the second painting in my "zoo series". It was inspired by a try to the zoo and this is the view from the other side of the flamingo exhibit. You can see them in the background |
Another mini painting of a rose from the garden. (15" x18" unframed). I had fun with the vibrant color and the highlights. I tried to make the background loose, suggestive and contrasty with the flower. | This painting is from a lily photo taken by Ted Halstead. I liked how the water reflections were in sharp contrast to the softness of the flower and lily pads. This painting won an Award of Merit at the Redwood Art Association New Years Show 2023. |
Mini painting (15"x 18" unframed) of a rose from the garden. I liked the vibrant color of the flower. The background was fun to play with and it reminded me of a space ship going into hyperdrive. | Couldn't resist taking a photo of the flamingos at the Sequoia Park Zoo and turning the photo into this painting. It was fun using all the pink color. They were a big contrast to the big redwood tree they sat under. This painting won First Place at the Redwood Art Association New Years Show 2023. |
This one is the second in a series of the Oregon Coast trip I took. There was this little stream coming out of the forest and into the beach at Sunset Bay State Park that I really liked. This painting won an Award of Merit at the Highland Art Center Annual Fall Show 2023. | On the Oregon Coast there are many amazing views. Cape Arago lookout point is one of them. Looking south from the Cape you can see the coastline with Humbug Mountain off in the distance. This painting won Best in Show at the Redwood Art Assn. Fall Show 2023. In private collection. |
This is the Lower Falls fishing hole at McCloud River. In the background is Mt. Shasta off in the distance. I was playing with my airbrush big time with this painting. | Here's a painting of my Aussie shepherd dog, Bodie, standing on a Boulder in the Sierras. |
This is from a photo I took at one of my fishing spots. At Upper Lake there is a marina and normally you fish off the rocks. Because of global warming, the lake was super low and the beach was exposed for the first time. It was a windy day and I was trying to capture the air flowing over the lake and mountains. | The McCloud reservoir is a great place to fish for trout. One morning when I was there fishing, I took a photo of the sun coming up through the fog. It made neat reflections on the water. So this painting is from that photo. |
Manzanar is the concentration camp that housed my dad's family during WWII for the crime of being Japanese. At the site, they reconstructed an old bridge that was part of the park built by the internees. When I went to visit, it was an overcast day and made the place even more solemn than normal. | This is another painting from the Arcata Bottoms area. I liked the reflection of the clouds as well as the cows out standing in their field. |
There were these cows, and the lighting was strange. It reminded me of an XFiles episode because of the weirdness of it. And the cows of course. | Pam, Ted and Thor were walking through the Arcata Bottoms and Ted captured this shot of the Liscom Slough. I like the clouds and water and thought it would make a good painting. This painting won First Place at the Redwood Art Association Gallery Spring Show in Eureka 2021. |
I was at the Arcata Marsh and the sunlight was shimmering, sparkling and glittering all over everything. I thought it would be fun to try to catch the light. In private collection. | A trail in Redwood Park with the trees towering above. In private collection. |
This large old growth redwood stump had lots of colorful textures. | My neighbor has a mini pond with water lilies. I waited for the flowers to open, then painted the reflections on the leaves. |
More water lilies and lily pads from my neighbor's mini pond. | In this painting the morning sun filled the eucalyptus tree with lights and colors. Reminded me of a calypso band, so I fiddled with the name. |
In this painting I saw the fire succulents and was amazed at the colors and the explosion of lights that seemed to come from it. | I liked lighting on the succulent in this painting. But I also liked the patterns in the sand, so I tried to paint both. Private Collection. |
Every morning I would walk in the desert and look at the beautiful mountains. I loved the light on the hills and the desert sky. Private Collection. | In this painting I was trying to capture the fall sunlight hitting the creek, spawning salmon, foliage and rocks. This painting was accepted to the National Juried Show at the Palos Verdes Art Center. |
When the sun comes over the mountain in the morning, the light hits the lake and turns everything golden. That morning three ducks were watching us fish. Private Collection. | This is a painting of tree branches on and in the water at Mosquito Point. Reflections on the water are of the surrounding mountains. In private collection. |
At the base of the big tree at mosquito point, the large roots are exposed at the edge of the lake. | Joshua tree silhouette off in the distance at Joshua Tree National Park. Menlo College Bowman Library Collection. |
Dry desert wash in the morning. The breeze was blowing and the subtle desert colors stood out to me. | Me and my dog walking in the morning sun and wind. It was winter in the desert and snow was on the mountain peaks in the background. This painting was selected in the California Expo at the California State Fair 2019. |
